This piece has won a 3rd place award at the Creek Council House show in Okmulgee, OK and a 2nd place at the 2000 Five Civilized Tribes Museum's Art Under the Oaks show. Each band of motifs were found on various items of pottery recovered from the large mound complex at Moundville, Alabama. The Moundville complex is situated south of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and incorporates over 300 acres along the Black Warrior River. This site flourished between approximately 1000 AD and 1500 AD with as many as 3,000 people living within its boundaries at any one time. Their skilled artisans created works from stone, clay, bone and copper.
